We thought we should address this for those of you who may question our sanity. Our journey actually started a few years ago as the idea of a family road trip was kicked around. Over the years, we have gained more of a vision for having a longer road trip where we could be together as a family and see some of the great and some of the obscure sights across the USA and talk a bit about our heritage. Through speakers we have heard (and even a managment class Ron took at work), we had confirmation that this was what we should do.
One of the things that was the hardest was figuring out how to do it. We talked about renting an RV, getting hotels across the way, flying (only briefly...nowadays, it's not very fun to fly). We ran some of the numbers and figured out that it would cost almost as much to rent an RV for the trip as it would be to purchase a good tent trailer that we could use after the trip as well. Finding one that fit all our crew was a challenge, but using the wonder that is the internet, my wife found an outstanding deal and we were committed.
We spent quite a few hours actually planning the trip. AAA's trip tix was invaluable as it allowed us to determine drive times, find campgrounds and attractions, and save all this as we were going along. We all have (to varying degrees) a passion for the pioneer days, so many of the stops we decided on are connected with that era. We made camping / lodging arrangements for all the weekend days, and now we are just a night's sleep away from leaving (ok, in addition to some last minute packing).
The girls are very excited and were all in bed late tonight (should make for an interesting day tomorrow!). Just one more night and our "Journey in June" begins!
Ron
